Transient Kinetics of Short-Chain Perfluoroalkyl Sulfonate with Radiolytic Reducing Species

چکیده
The role of the short-lived hydrated electron (eaq–) has recently begun to be appreciated in per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remediations; nevertheless, few studies date focused on short-chain PFAS, their effective defluorination been limited by an insufficient mechanistic understanding, which starts with elusive initial step eaq– reduction. Herein, this study uses pulse radiolysis clarify rate constant reaction a highly recalcitrant perfluorobutanesulfonate (PFBS, C4F9SO3–), verify chain length dependence. measured values contradict earlier results from laser photolysis but reconcile apparent degradation profiles theoretical predictions. Besides, we first disclose radiolytic carbon dioxide radicals (CO2–•) defluorinate PFBS 4.8 × 107 M–1 s–1, it achieves selective cleavage more obstinate C–F bond than even under neutral condition. Quantitative 60Co γ-ray irradiation experiments further show that reduction occurs through pathway rather desulfurization pathway, redox potential exceeds −2.0 eV. This addressed long-standing contradictions regarding PFAS suggested ionizing radiation as versatile direct treatment technique.

Short-chain perfluoroalkyl acids: environmental concerns and a regulatory strategy under REACH
Background Short-chain PFASs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are widely used as alternatives to long-chain PFASs. Long-chain PFASs become gradually regulated under REACH (EC No. 1907/2006) and other international regulations, due to having persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic properties and/or being toxic for reproduction. The increasingly used short-chain PFASs are assumed to have a low...
متن کاملToxicokinetics of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids with different carbon chain lengths in mice and humans.
OBJECTIVES Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) consist of analogs with various carbon chain lengths. Their toxicokinetics have remained unexplored except in the case of perfluorooctanoic acid (8 carbon chemicals). This study aimed to investigate the toxicokinetics of PFCAs with six to fourteen carbon atoms (C6 to C14) in mice and humans. METHODS We applied a two-compartment model to mice ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Coking on Kinetics of HDS Reaction under Steady and Transient States
A study was made of the coking of a commercial fresh sulfide Ni-Mo/Al2O3 catalyst in a fixed-bed reactor. The catalyst was coked using different coke precursors in the gas oil under accelerated conditions at temperatures of 400 to 450°C to yield different deactivated catalysts containing 2-20 wt% C. Two cases were studied; crushed catalyst without diffusional ...
متن کاملRadiolytic signature of Z-DNA.
Ionizing radiations induce various damages in DNA via the hydroxyl radical OH. generated by the radiolysis of water. We compare here the radiosensitivity of B- and Z-DNA, by using a Z-prone stretch included in a plasmid. In the supercoiled plasmid, the stretch is in the Z-form, whereas it is in the B-form when the plasmid is relaxed. Frank strand breaks (FSB) and alkali-revealed breaks (ARB) we...
متن کاملTransient state kinetics tutorial using the kinetics simulation program, KINSIM.
This article provides an introduction to a computer tutorial on transient state kinetics. The tutorial uses our Macintosh version of the computer program, KINSIM, that calculates the time course of reactions. KINSIM is also available for other popular computers. This program allows even those investigators not mathematically inclined to evaluate the rate constants for the transitions between th...
